Giving Back: 4 Impactful Ways to Help Food Banks Over the Holidays

While enjoying holiday gatherings and comfort foods galore, don’t forget those struggling to put food on the table. Did you know that 1 in 9 people in Georgia are food insecure, sometimes not knowing when they’ll get their next meal? Food banks play a crucial role in supporting communities, and right here in Atlanta is one of the largest food banks in the country — the Atlanta Community Food Bank

Here are four ways to help combat hunger this holiday season:

1. Donate

All donations, no matter the size, have a tremendous impact.

Grocery Items: Bring non-perishable items like canned food or whole grains to a local food bank. The Atlanta Community Food Bank makes it easy by sharing a list of their most needed items

Money: Donate on their website or attend one of their fundraising events, like a golf tournament, auction, or hunger walk/run. Offer to match your employees’ donations.

2. Volunteer

Volunteer at your local food bank, or bring your team along to make a greater impact. Whether you’re sorting and packing food or helping with distribution and administrative tasks, your time and effort will go far. The Atlanta Community Food Bank receives over 9 million pounds of grocery items each month, so they could use a hand or two — or 10!

3. Spread Awareness

Use social media to raise awareness about food insecurity and hunger in your community. Share posts highlighting local food banks and the impact of donating and volunteering.

4. Host a Food Drive

Host a food drive at your business and collect non-perishable food items such as canned goods, pasta, and cereal. Promote the event on social media to encourage the community to get involved.

Since 1979, the Atlanta Community Food Bank has been on a mission to end hunger in Atlanta — and your generosity can help make that happen. They work magic with donations and can stretch $1 to create three meals! Their collaboration with local schools ensures children get a nutritious breakfast, and their Nutrition and Wellness program provides education to universities, hospitals, and youth groups.
