8 Helpful Ways to Shine in Your Video Job Interview

Video job interviews have become more common in the last few years. Whether you’ve interviewed by video or not, it’s essential to prepare every time. Here are eight tips for making a great impression during your video job interview!

1. Do Your Research

Take the time to research the company and role you’re interviewing for. This can help you prepare questions and tailor your responses using that knowledge. Throwing in a tidbit about the company can impress your interviewer.

2. Eliminate Distractions

Both you and your interviewer need to focus solely on your conversation — not background noises or distractions. Close all other tabs, turn off the TV, and put your phone away. If you share your space with others, let them know you need silence during your interview.

3. Choose the Best Angle and Lighting

Look your best by positioning yourself and your computer for the best angle and lighting. No matter what device you use for your interview, the camera must be at eye level. Sitting in natural light is always best, but any lighting used should be in front of you instead of behind you.

4. Dress to Impress

Treat your video interview as you would an in-person interview. You only have one chance to make an excellent first impression, so show you care enough about the job by dressing professionally.

5. Practice Makes Perfect

Whether on your own or with a friend, do a few mock interviews so you show up confident and prepared. Practicing lets you see how you feel, sound, and look on video. Look up common interview questions for the position you’ve applied for and practice answering them.

6. Control Your Background

If you’re not thrilled about having your interviewer see inside your home, you can choose a custom background or blur it out. If you decide not to use a custom background, make sure your environment is tidy and clutter-free.

7. Arrive Early

Log in early to show your interviewer you’re punctual and respectful of their time. Starting early also gives you time to address any last-minute technical difficulties.

8. Make Eye Contact

Look into the webcam to create a personal connection and maintain eye contact. Position your interview window as close to your camera as possible to maximize eye contact rather than looking down or to the side.
